History:

The origins of Dorrell Oliver can be traced back to the early 20^th Century with the birth of Dan Dorrell in 1903. His family home was what are now the offices of the current firm in Monk Street Abergavenny. Both Dan and his brother Bill were born here, Bill was born in 1913. Dan R Dorrell became an accountant, setting up the firm in 1928, firstly practising from offices in another building in Monk Street, close to St. Marys Chambers. He was later joined by his brother Bill.

Mr Oliver was born in 1914, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Newport in 1937 and joined Messrs Dorrell after a short spell as an accountancy tutor in Newport South Wales. The partnership of Dorrell, Oliver and Co was formally established in 1947 and moved to its current premises around that date.

In the subsequent years, the practice expanded with additional accountants joining as partners, with Brian Butterworth FCA, Fred Utting FCA, and Huw Thomas FCA, joining in the 1960’s and enjoying long careers until their respective retirements.

Our Current Structure:

Peter Lea FCA (Director): Peter qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Birmingham in 1973, before joining the practice of Dorrell Oliver & Co. in 1974. He became a partner a year later and senior partner in 2000. More recently Dorrell Oliver & Co. incorporated to become Dorrell Oliver Ltd and Peter is a director of the Company. Peter is also a director of Dorrell Oliver Financial Services Ltd.

Ernie Moore FCA: (Director): Ernie also gained his qualifications and membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1973. He joined Peter as an Accountant at Dorrell Oliver & Co., following experience gained in the West Midlands and Bristol. He became a partner shortly after Peter in 1975 and joined Peter as a Director of the new companies Dorrell Oliver Ltd and Dorrell Oliver Financial Services Ltd.

Ashley Vowles ACA FCCA (Director): Ashley joined Dorrell Oliver & Co.  in 1987 and gained qualifications through the University of South Wales before becoming qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. He became a director in 2019 and has a broad range of experience in practice.

Our current staff members have hundreds of years of combined experience – several of whom carry AAT qualifications and software certification. Our long established association with the OFFA group ensures continuing professional development and training in a variety of disciplines.
